Hey, hey!

I seem to have broken the Hub (I know, absolutely no one is surprise), so I've had to use the emergency broadcast channel, which means no Vren, but he'll be back. Alas. Anyways, I wanted to drop you a quick line because it's been yonks since I gave you an update on how the books and everything are going.

The books have taken much longer, and been more complex to put together than I anticipated, but they're finally here. Check out the unboxing video below.

[In the Hub, the giant teal dragon stretches and yawns. No longer singed or ruffled, Vren looks none the worse for wear after his ordeal in the Archives. The Christmas break appears to have done some good.]

Hey, hey Defiant Ones!

If you get the newsletter, you'll know that Vren has took a breather over the festive season and I took one just after, which is why you haven't heard from us in a bit. 

In good news, the Omnibus is almost ready to head to the printer, I just need your name for the Acknowledgments section. All going to plan—[🐉 The dragon scoffs. 'When does it ever go to plan?']—books will be printed and ready for posting by the end of January.

Hub Hoppers,

The dragon has been found—

Flame wipes out the rest of the report.
The screen flickers.
Flickers again and then—

[🐉 A giant teal eye, slit-pupiled like a snake's—or a dragon's—fills the screen.

It blinks. There's a sound like a great bellows sighing and then… the camera pulls back and back, and back and BACK…

Eventually it stops and there, square in centre frame is Vren, the great cosmic dragon in all his frilled and horned glory. His mane looks a little singed and there's a smudge of soot on his long, equine-like muzzle, but he appears otherwise none the worse for wear.

'Hello, little mortal,' he says. 'I hear you helped with my… predicament in the Office of Narrative Compliance. The algorithms can be a little overzealous at times, not helped by the Author's constant meddling.'

From a great distance comes an indignant, 'Hey!', which the dragon ignores.

'For your help I must thank you, little mortal. My foray into the Library of Unwritten Things and then into the Office of Narrative Compliance was… fruitful.'

His gaze flicks down to one of the massive, leathery wings folded neatly against his scaled side, and in the crease where it rests against his foreleg, you spot the top of a scroll.

Vren clears his throat and the camera snaps back to his face, even as he taps the scroll deeper into the shadows under his wing.

'Secrets for another time, little mortal. Until then, I'm sure you're wondering what happens now that the Hero 10th Anniversary was a success.

'Well, once again the Author has left me to oversee everything, but she did provide this timeline of when to expect surveys and your books.']
 

What happens next…

 
  1. We started here —> The Hero 10th Anniversary campaign is done, and thanks to you, it's a resounding success! Thank you 🙂.
  2. BackerKit's turn (Next 7 days): BackerKit will collect your pledges. Don't worry if there are any hiccups with your payment method – they'll reach out directly to sort things out.
  3. Survey time! (Coming soon): You'll receive a survey through BackerKit where you can:
    • Choose your name for the Acknowledgments (or remain a mysterious rebel)
    • Confirm your shipping details
    • Grab any last-minute add-ons you might have missed
    • The Author will send another update when these go out.
  4. Survey lockdown: You'll have plenty of time to adjust your choices, but once we lock the surveys, only shipping addresses can be changed. Don't worry – you'll get 24 hours notice before this happens!
  5. Your name in print: Once surveys are locked, your chosen name will be immortalised in the Acknowledgments.
  6. Digital delivery: All ebooks and digital goodies will wing their way to you via BackerKit. As always, the Author will send an update when this happens.
  7. Production begins: The Hero Nexus Editions head to the printer, and the magic becomes reality!
  8. The great packing adventure: Once the books arrive, the Author will sign, number, and carefully pack each one.
  9. Final address check: One last chance to update your shipping address before the books begin their journey.
  10. The grand departure: The Author will make Sam the postwoman's day with a mountain of parcels. You'll receive tracking information for your packages where applicable.

Time is short. 

Despite a brief period of stability, the timelines are starting to fracture. We urgently need the dragon.

You're efforts to find the dragon's keywords and submit Form 27-B (“Application to Not Be Consumed by a Cosmic Dragon”), were successful. Unfortunately, by the time it was processed, Vren had already released himself; Plot Bunny operatives found the charred remains of several ONC minions in the Disciplinary office.

However, the dragon's actions were not without consequence; when he submitted his next form—Form 99-X (”Notification of Liberation from Bibliographic Context”)—there was an Archive backlash. Vren is now stuck in the very book he tried to free a character from. 

We are unsure who Vren was trying to free, or what story they were in, only that the dragon is in there with them.

The backlash scrambled the Archives and further destabilised the timelines. Without the dragon, complete collapse is inevitable.

We need you for one final push, Hub Hopper. Find the clues, submit the last form and retrieve Vren.

  2. Submit Form 99-X (”Notification of Liberation from Bibliographic Context”)
  3. Retrieve the Unlock Key, and submit it via the comments below.

Fathom was inspired by the Author's nephew, who requested a story with tuna in it. The story then went on to inspire 3 more, all with input from young people in the Author's life.
